Background and requirement
With a backlog of patients awaiting radiotherapy treatment, a partner was sought who could deliver radiotherapy, reduce waiting times and free up substantive radiotherapy staff to focus on developing department protocols and research. The trust wanted to ensure they were on track with the NHS England waiting time target, of no more than 31 days wait between the patient agreeing their treatment plan and the start of treatment.
Our client needed a value for money, high-quality service that would be responsive to their needs and offer robust contract management. Though most importantly, could show strong evidence of proven delivery.
Solution and results
GWS provided a project manager and clinical lead to oversee the implementation and delivery. Ensuring a full end to end team of clinical staff, and managing the integration into the client’s organisation to utilise spare, out-of-hours capacity.With direction and guidance from both GWS and client, a team of 9 radiotherapists worked to remove the backlog, bolstering outputs and offering the trust the ability to plan and treat a significantly higher number of patients.The result of this focused approach enabled the backlog to be cleared within 3 months. The process was so effective the service has been extended to continue to run to ensure patients receive treatment within NHS treatment targets.
